Columbia School District is required by Federal Law to monitor and filter the usage of our federally funded network and internet connection. Most web activity these days occurs over a secure SSL connection (https). The nature of a secure connection is that nothing in the middle (such as our tracking and filter) can see the traffic. In order to comply with federal law, you must allow us to watch the traffic when you are using the Columbia School District network resources. You do this by installing a local security certificate on your personal device. If you do not do this, your access to internet sites will be limited to an extremely small number of internet sites that are “whitelisted” in our filter.
One note: All traffic to and from known banking sites is not being inspected by the SSL inspection system as those sites are whitelisted. You are safe in using your Columbia School District internet connection for banking activity; however, the smart thing to do would be to wait until you are not on a monitored system to do anything involving sensitive information such as banking.
